ANCHORAGE – Kevin McDonald didn’t watch a single Alaska Aces game in person during the first half of the ECHL season. Yet, few folks in North America could be more in tune with the team’s progress.
Playing their first season as the AA-level affiliate of the National Hockey League’s St. Louis Blues and American Hockey League’s Peoria (Ill.) Rivermen, the Aces return home Wednesday 21 games over .500 with the ECHL’s second-best winning percentage. They host the Stockton (Calif.) Thunder in the first of a three-game series at Sullivan Arena.
McDonald, St. Louis’ director of professional scouting and Peoria’s general manager, won’t be in attendance. But he’ll pay close attention to the outcome nonetheless.
“I always feel like I’m there,” McDonald said. “I have not seen a game live, but I talk to (Alaska coach Davis Payne), follow the Aces in the newspaper and on their web site. I’m in touch like the fans with a lot of the facts, the records and who is doing what.
