Barton recalled by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

The Wheeling Nailers, ECHL affiliate for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, announced that forward Chris Barton has been recalled by the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Barton, 24, who signed a two-way contract by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last week, joins the Penguins after spending the first two-plus months of his professional career with the Wheeling Nailers. In 21 games with the Nailers, Barton had 15 goals, 11 assists and 26 points, leading the ECHL in goals and points by a rookie.

Barton recorded at least one point in nine of the Nailers’ ten games in November, scoring seven goals and adding eight assists for 15 points. That performance earned him November’s ECHL Rookie of the Month Award, and also helped him win the ECHL’s Player of the Week Award for the week of November 14-20, when he had six points in three games.

This is Barton’s first season of professional hockey, following a four-year career at Merrimack College. In 141 career games as a Warrior, the 5-foot-11 forward had 48 goals and 71 assists for 119 points.
