Behind the ECHL Benches – Al Sims


Al Sims enters his first full season with Evansville after taking over as the club’s head coach on Jan. 9, 2015. During his coaching career, Sims has led five teams to championships, including three straight International Hockey League titles with Fort Wayne from 2008-10.

Sims was selected by the Boston Bruins in the third round (47th overall) of the 1973 NHL Entry Draft. The Toronto, Ontario native went on to play 476 regular season and 40 playoff games in the NHL for the Bruins, Hartford Whalers and Los Angeles Kings.

Since the 1989-90 season, Sims has coached in the NHL, ECHL, CHL and IHL. The 61-year-old began his coaching career with the IHL’s Fort Wayne Komets where he qualified for the playoffs in each of his four years and won the IHL championship in the 1992-93 season. He moved on to the National Hockey League where he became an assistant coach for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for three years before becoming the head coach of the San Jose Sharks for the 1996-97 season. After his NHL tenure, Sims went on to coach the Milwaukee Admirals (IHL), Reading Royals (ECHL), Corpus Christi Rayz (CHL) and Fort Worth Brahmas (CHL). He returned to Fort Wayne in 2007-08 and in six seasons posted a record of 256-132-44 in the IHL, CHL and ECHL while leading the Komets to league championships in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013. For the past year and a half, Sims has coached in the GMHL (Greater Metro Junior Hockey League) in Ontario.
