Toledo, Ohio – Forwards Kyle Bonis and Shane Berschbach have agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2015-16 season.
The Walleye are the ECHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
Bonis returns after setting a single season Walleye record with 36 goals in 2014-15. He collected a total of 61 goals over two seasons in the ECHL counting the 25 he scored with Florida in 2013-14. The 26-year-old finished last year with 59 points (36g-23a) and a +14. His eight-game winning goals was also a single season Walleye record with 11 of his 36 goals during the regular season coming on the power play. In April, Bonis shared the ECHL Plus Performer Award with teammate Cody Lampl as each posted a +9 in the month.
Bonis added nine more goals to his totals during the 2015 Kelly Cup Playoffs, including an overtime shorthanded goal in Game Seven of the North Division Semifinals against Wheeling to allow Toledo to advance. That went along with his team best two shorthanded goals in the regular season. The Lindsay, Ontario native finished the postseason with 15 points (9g-6a) in 21 contests.
Berschbach, a native of Royal Oak, Mich., spent the majority of last season in Toledo setting a new single season Walleye record with 48 assists. He also added 15 goals for a total of 63 points in 65 games during the 2014-15 season, which was second on the team in scoring. In 21 playoff contests, Berschbach led the Walleye in scoring with 25 points (8g-17a). He also appeared in five games with Grand Rapids.
The 24-year-old spent four years at Western Michigan University prior to turning professional. As a Bronco, Berschbach posted 39 goals and 78 assists as was a +27 in 146 games. He set career highs as a senior with 16 goals, 22 assists and 38 points. In 2012, the 5’10", 165-pound forward helped Western Michigan to the CCHA Tournament championship.
