Capitals Sign Fortin

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals announced that they have signed defenseman Jean-Francois Fortin, who played in the ECHL. The South Carolina Stingrays are the ECHL affiliate of the Capitals and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

In his rookie season in 1999-2000, the 6-2 and 205-pound Fortin had two assists in seven games with Hampton Roads of the ECHL and eight points (3g-5a) in 43 games with Portland of the AHL. Selected in the second round (35th overall) by the Capitals in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Fortin returned to the ECHL in 2000-01 and had four assists in 15 games with Richmond.

In 2004-05 with Portland of the AHL, the 26-year-old Fortin had eight points (1g-7a) and 50 penalty minutes in 39 games.
