DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Stars announced that they have hired Jason Shaver as director of broadcasting and corporate sales. Shaver, who was vice president of communications and the play-by-play voice of the Texas Wildcatters the past two seasons, will be the play-by-play voice of the Dallas Stars American Hockey League affiliate.
The 32-year-old Shaver began his career in hockey as a member of the Minnesota North Stars game night staff and later became a broadcast assistant for Manitoba of the International Hockey League. The 1995 graduate of Augsburg College got his first full-time job as the director of communications for Waterloo of the United States Hockey League and during the offseason was the radio voice of the Waterloo baseball team. Shaver was selected to do the television broadcast of the 1995 USHL All-Star Game and also did the play-by-play broadcast for the 1996 Junior A National Championship Tournament.
Shaver is a third generation hockey broadcaster. His grandfather, Al Shaver, spent 26 seasons as the radio announcer for the Minnesota North Stars, retiring when the team relocated to Dallas, and in 1993 he was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame. His father, Wally Shaver, is the broadcaster for the University of Minnesota hockey team.
Former ECHL coach Dave Allison is Iowa's first head coach and Scott White, who coached Columbia for its first four seasons, is director of hockey operations while former ECHL staff accountant Jennifer Hintz is the team's controller.
