Gwinnett’s Jon Awe leads the ECHL with 15 power-play goals and is one power-play goal shy of the ECHL record for power-play goals by a defenseman set by Joe Cook of Columbus who scored 16 power-play goals in 1993-94 and tied by four-time ECHL Defenseman of the Year and seven-time ECHL All-Star Chris Valicevic in 1995-96.
Awe, who was voted as a starter for the American Conference for the ECHL All-Star Game on Jan. 17, scored his league-leading 15th power-play goal in a 6-4 win at Pensacola on Jan. 6, the 14th time in 31 games that he has scored a power-play goal. He leads league defensemen with 17 goals, 37 points, 17 power-play assists and 32 power-play points.
The Gladiators will host Pensacola on Thursday and Texas on Saturday and Monday while playing at Columbia on Friday.
Brad Schell, who was also voted as a starter for the All-Star Game, leads the league with 30 power-play assists and 38 power-play points while teammate Scott Mifsud is second with 27 power-play assists and tied with Awe for second with 32 power-play points. Schell is also the ECHL leader with 50 assists and 65 points while Mifsud is second with 38 assists and 52 points. Gwinnett’s Colton Fretter, who was also selected to the All-Star Game, leads league rookies with 20 goals, 10 power-play goals and 38 points in 34 games.
The Gladiators average almost two power-play goals per game and lead the ECHL with 67 power-play goals in 34 games while their power-play unit is also atop the league at 26.2 percent (67-for-256). Gwinnett averages over two power-play goals per game at home with 37 power-play goals in 15 games and it home power-play unit leads the league at 31.1 percent while its road power-play unit is tied for the lead with Texas at 21.9 percent. The Gladiators scored 114 power-play goals in 2005-06, one shy of the league record of 115 power-play goals set by Nashville in 1995-96.
Gwinnett, which leads the league in scoring with 147 goals and 4.32 goals-per game, is 19-11-4 and in third place in the South Division with 42 points.
