KALAMAZOO, Mich. - On Tuesday, Kalamazoo Wings goaltender Julien Ellis talked about looking forward to being called up to the American Hockey League sometime this season.
On Wednesday, that happened.
K-Wings coach Nick Bootland got a call at 9:58 a.m. from the Lake Erie Monsters asking for a backup goaltender for their noon game against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Ellis was dressed for practice, just waiting for a repaired pad before hitting the ice. He made a quick change, got to the arena shortly after 11 a.m. in time for warmups, and was on the bench for the Monsters’ 2-1 shootout loss.
He’s the second K-Wings goalie to make a trip to the AHL.
Ryan Nie is with the Portland Pirates and, while Ellis returned to Kalamazoo Wednesday night, Nie joins K-Wings Darryl Bootland (Manitoba Moose), Matt Jones and Will Colbert (Worcester Sharks) and David Sloane (Adirondack Phantoms) currently in the AHL.
