Checkers Give Longo,
Wilkinson Contract Extensions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Checkers announced that head coach and general manager Derek Wilkinson and team president Jeff Longo (pictured) have signed two-year contract extensions.

“In Jeff and Derek, we have signed two of the finest young executives in the ECHL,” said Checkers owner and CEO Carl Scheer. “Their consummate leadership abilities will guide the Checkers as we move forward into this new era.”

In his first full season, Wilkinson led Charlotte to its first postseason appearance in three seasons with a record of 39-26-7. Charlotte won three games in a row to upset division winner Columbia in the American Conference Quarterfinals, advancing to the second round of the playoffs for the third time in the team’s 12-year history.

The driving force behind a 10 percent increase in attendance this season, Longo came to Charlotte after six seasons with San Diego. During his tenure in San Diego, the Gulls were named Organization of the Year in the now defunct West Coast Hockey League in 2000 and 20003 and led the league in attendance for each of Longo’s six seasons.
