Chiefs to Honor Quecreek Coal Miners

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Johnstown Chiefs will honor the Quecreek coal miners in a special ceremony prior to the start of the Chiefs’ home opener against Toledo at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Nine miners from the Black Wolf Coal Mining Company were trapped more than 200 feet underground from July 24-27 in a mine located approximately 25 miles south of Johnstown. The heroic rescue generated international attention as the nine brave men overcame the environment of the cold, flooded and dark Quecreek mine for three and a half days.

Several of the trapped miners will be in attendance along with other members of the mining crew that escaped the accident.
