ECHL announces Preseason Schedule


The ECHL on Wednesday announced its preseason schedule of 24 games beginning Oct. 7 and continuing through Oct. 13.

The preseason opens on Wednesday, Oct. 7 with a pair of games – Indy hosting Fort Wayne and Wheeling visiting Cincinnati.

The Premier ‘AA’ Hockey League will open its 28th season with 11 games on Friday, Oct. 16. Opening weekend continues with 13 games on Saturday, Oct. 17 and three games on Sunday, Oct. 18.

The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,598 fans per game in 2014-15, the 11th consecutive season and the 23rd time in the last 25 years that the ECHL has averaged over 4,000 fans.

Began in 1988-89 with five teams in four states, the ECHL has grown into a coast-to-coast league with 28 teams in 21 states and one Canadian province for its 28th season in 2015-16. There have been 569 players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League after starting their careers in the ECHL, including 28 who made their NHL debuts in the 2014-15 season. The ECHL had affiliations with 29 of the 30 NHL teams in 2014-15, marking the 18th consecutive season that the league had affiliations with at least 20 teams in the NHL.
