ECHL Olympic Update

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL is represented by 25 players and former Wheeling and current Team USA coach Peter Laviolette at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

Nine of the 11 teams have an ECHL player led by Latvia which has eight former ECHL players including current Stockton Thunder Maris Ziedins.

Here is a look at how some of the former ECHL players performed on Wednesday:

Jason Cirone (Birmingham, 1993-94) and John Parco (Hampton Roads, 1994-95 and 1999-2000) each scored a goal and Tony Tuzzolino (Huntington, 1999-2000 and Louisiana, 2002-03) had an assist in Italy’s 7-2 loss to Canada.

David Aebischer (Chesapeake and Wheeling, 1997-98) stopped all 12 shots he faced after replacing Martin Gerber in Switzerland’s 5-0 loss to Finland.

Vitali Yeremeyev (Charlotte, 2000-02) made 27 saves in Kazakhstan’s 7-2 loss to Sweden.

Tomas Vokoun (Wheeling, 1995-96) made 20 saves and assisted on a goal after replacing Dominik Hasek in Czech Republic’s 4-1 win against Germany.

Olaf Kolzig (Hampton Roads, 1990-92) had 30 saves in Germany’s 4-1 loss to Czech Republic.

Arturs Irbe (Johnstown, 2002-03) had 39 saves while Herbert Vasiljevs (Knoxville, 1996-97) scored a goal and Rodrigo Lavins (Raleigh, 1994-95 and Tallahassee, 1994-97) had an assist in Latvia’s 3-3 tie with the United States.

Scott Gomez (Alaska, 2004-05) had an assist in the United States’ 3-3 tie with Latvia.
