The ECHL’s 28th season faced off with 27 games last weekend. Of the teams who played more than one game on opening weekend, five teams escaped with unblemished records.
Florida is the only team in the Eastern Conference with a perfect record after playing multiple games. The Everblades defeated Atlanta 4-3 in overtime on Friday and 6-1 on Saturday. In Friday’s game, Evan Bloodoff scored the first 3-on-3 overtime goal in ECHL history while on Saturday, Ethan Werek scored a pair of goals to lead Florida to victory.
In the Midwest Division, both Fort Wayne and Indy picked up wins in each of their outings over the weekend. The Komets swept a home-and-home series against Kalamazoo, winning 5-3 on the road on Friday before picking up a 3-1 victory in their home opener on Saturday. Indy picked up a 3-2 shootout win over Toledo on Friday before going on the road and downing Evansville 3-1 on Saturday.
Wichita has started 2-0-0 with a pair of one-goal victories. The Thunder defeated Tulsa 3-2 on Friday with Kenton Miller scoring the game-winning tally, his second goal of the night, with just 1:19 remaining in regulation. Wichita opened its home schedule on Saturday with a 5-4 shootout win over Quad City.
Utah opened the season with a pair of games at Colorado and came away with a 4-3 overtime win on Friday and a 5-2 victory on Saturday. Barry Almeida leads the league with five goals after one weekend, including a four-goal performance in Saturday’s win.
The Missouri Mavericks also have two wins on the young season after taking two of three games in Alaska over the weekend. Josh Robinson picked up both wins in goal for Missouri, allowing just one goal on 54 shots in his two starts.
Four other teams – Adirondack, Cincinnati, Manchester and Orlando – opened the season with a win in their only outing of the weekend, while Idaho and Quad City began the year with points in both games going 1-0-1 for the weekend.
