Fans Follow Steelheads To Ohio For Finals

FAIRBORN, Ohio — In a sea of Bombers fans at the Nutter Center, they were easy to spot.

Debbie Cummings was wearing an Idaho Steelheads jersey with Marty Flichel‘s name on the back. Her husband, Dennis Cummings, was sporting a Francis Wathier Steelheads jersey.

It seems Debbie talked Dennis into giving up his fishing trip on the Columbia River for a trip to Ohio for the Kelly Cup Finals.

So, instead of fishing it was Steelheads for Dennis.

The Cummingses, along with friends Allyn and Gayle Palmer, plan to attend all three of the Kelly Cup Finals games in Dayton.

“We’ve just been treated great,” Dennis Cummings said. “Not like the beer baths we’ve been treated to at some of the other places we’ve been to.”

These aren’t your average Steelheads fans, obviously.

“We’ve been sitting in the same seats (section 211 at Qwest Arena) all 10 years,” Debbie Cummings said.

The group got airline reservations shortly after the Steelheads clinched a spot in the finals and they had a chance to take in some of the local attractions Saturday. Their most memorable moment so far: the establishment that had all-you-can-eat baby-back ribs and beer at $2.50 a pint.

Next up is a Cincinnati Reds game on Sunday.

In the meantime, the debate was whether it would be fun to have bragging rights as one of the few fans to witness the Steelheads winning two more games in a row to sew up the Kelly Cup in Ohio.

“I just want them to win it,” Debbie Cummings said.
