Final touches are being made to the outdoor ice rink at Fifth Third Field in preparation of Toledo Walleye Winterfest.
Rink Specialists VP of Operations Dave Fies says other than a few cosmetic items to check off, they’re in great shape for the 10-day winter festival to begin on Friday, Dec. 26. “If they were ready to play hockey right now, we have enough ice over the lines we would be able to do a game.” Fies says crews will continue to work on building up the ice thickness as a precaution in case there is a heavy rainfall, to protect the lines from washing out.
Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4, Fies says maintaining the outdoor ice rink will depend on the weather. “Typically we try to keep the ice a certain thickness above the lines, so by the end of each day if we have more ice than we’d like we would stay some extra time shave more ice off, or if there’s not enough we would put more water down.”
The ASPO Walleye Sled Hockey Team will play the very first game during Winterfest, on Dec. 26 at 9:30 a.m. For a complete Winterfest schedule click HERE.
