CEDAR PARK — Glen Gulutzan was at the tail end of another 14-hour day when the thought occurred to him: Time was slipping away.

That may sound dramatic, but not to Gulutzan, the Texas Stars coach who six years ago vowed not only to give his extra time exclusively to his family, but to create even more of it to spend with them.

He trimmed down on his hours at the rink, sliced back the spare moments he spent in the office and eliminated his extracurriculars with everyone from players to upper management — not exactly the way a first-year coach trying to climb the managerial ladder might operate.
