Halak is The MeiGray Group ECHL Alumnus of the Month

 

Former ECHL and current New York Islanders’ goaltender Jaroslav Halak is The MeiGray Group ECHL Alumnus of the Month for November.           

 

The leading distributor of game- worn hockey jerseys and “Official Game-Worn Jersey Source of the ECHL,” MeiGray has sold more than 6,900 jerseys since it became “The Official Game-Worn Jersey Source of the ECHL” in 2002-03.

 

The 29-year-old went 9-1-0 in 10 appearances during November with three shutouts, a 1.37 goals-against average and a save percentage of .950. After suffering a loss in his first appearance during the month, Halak won his final nine starts and his current 10-game winning streak is tied with Billy Smith for the franchise record. Two of his three shutouts came in back-to-back appearances as he made 19 saves in a 1-0 win Arizona on Nov. 8 and stopped 20 shots in a 6-0 victory against Colorado on Nov. 11. Halak allowed two goals or less in eight of his 10 starts in November and he made at least 25 saves seven times. He is 13-4-0 in 17 games this season and is third in the NHL with three shutouts, eighth with a 2.12 goals-against average and ninth with a .925 save percentage.

 

Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the ninth round (271st overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Halak has appeared in 289 career NHL games with the Islanders, Washington, St. Louis and Montreal posting an overall record of 157-89-29 with 33 shutouts, a 2.36 goals-against average and a save percentage of .918.

 

A native of Bratislava, Slovakia, Halak made his professional debut in the ECHL with Long Beach in 2005-06, appearing in 20 games with a record of 11-4-2 with two shutouts, a 2.05 goals-against average and a save percentage of .932.

 

There have been 548 players who have played in the NHL after playing in the ECHL including seven who have made their debut in 2014-15. The ECHL has had 403 players reach the NHL since 2002-03 when it changed its focus to become the primary developmental league for the NHL and the AHL. The ECHL had 97 players reach the NHL in its first 10 seasons and 215 in the first 15 years. There have been 292 ECHL players who have played their first game in the last 10 seasons for an average of more than 29 per year.
