The ECHL announced on Wednesday that Billy Higgins of the Wheeling Nailers is the 2013-14 recipient of the ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year Award, presented by Reebok.
The winner is determined in a vote of the league’s equipment managers and athletic trainers. Reebok recognizes the efforts and accomplishments of ECHL equipment managers and will award Higgins a pair of custom Reebok ZigTech shoes in honor of his achievement.
Higgins has served as the Nailers’ equipment manager since the 2003-04 season, and has worked 792 consecutive regular-season games and 49 postseason games over that span. He was selected by his peers to serve as an equipment manager at the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Idaho. Prior to joining the team full-time, he spent three seasons as an assistant equipment manager with the club from 2000-03. The 32-year-old native of Wheeling has also served as an emergency back-up goaltender with the Nailers for over 100 games.
