Irbe Chosen To Carry Latvia Flag
In Olympics Opening Ceremony

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Johnstown Chiefs announced that former goaltender Arturs Irbe has been chosen to carry the flag of Latvia in the opening ceremony for the 2006 Winter Olympics on Friday in Turino, Italy.

There are nine players with ECHL experience on the Latvia hockey roster including current Stockton Thunder forward Maris Ziedins. The other players are Sergei Naumov, Rodrigo Lavins, Arvid Rekis, Agris Saviels, Armands Berzins, Aigars Cipruss and Herbert Vasiljevs.

Latvia opens the Olympics at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday against the United States which is coached by former ECHL coach Peter Laviolette and whose roster includes Scott Gomez, who was voted the ECHL Most Valuable Player in 2004-05 while playing for the Alaska Aces in his hometown of Anchorage during the NHL lockout.
