Jackals agree to terms with Matthew Zay

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Jackals, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and AHL’s Rochester Americans, announced the team has agreed to terms with forward Matthew Zay for the 2016-17 season.

Zay joins the Jackals in his second professional season after skating for the Evansville IceMen during the 2015-16 campaign. The 25-year-old recorded 21 points (9g-12a) and 52 penalty minutes in 58 games as a rookie. Zay also appeared in seven AHL contests at the end of the 2014-15 season between the Springfield Falcons and the Binghamton Senators recording one goal and seven penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, the Glendale, N.Y. native skated in 151 NCAA games over four seasons at Mercyhurst University totaling 128 points (47g-81a), 131 penalty minutes and a +32 rating. Zay served as the team captain as a senior while skating in all 39 games. He posted career highs with 17 goals and 43 points while tying a career high with 26 assists as a junior. Zay was named to the Atlantic Hockey Association First All-Star Team and was named Mercyhurst’s Best Forward. During his sophomore campaign, Zay was the AHA Scoring Champion and was named to the AHA Third All-Conference Team registering 39 points (13g-26a) in 41 games.

Before attending Mercyhurst, Zay played for the Pembroke Lumber Kings in the CCHL notching 53 points (18g-35a) in 55 games. He was named a league All-Star and helped the Lumber Kings win the league championship, the Eastern Canada championship and the RBC National Championship.
