The Elmira Jackals have won a season high four consecutive games to improve to 16-22-4 for 36 points, and move to within 11 points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Elmira opened last week with a 4-1 home win against Kalamazoo on Wednesday. Mike Vaskivuo (1g-2a) and Jakub Culek (3a) led the way for the Jackals with three points each while Neil Conway turned aside 28 Kalamazoo shots to pick up the win in net.
The Jackals began a five-game road trip on Friday, rallying for a 4-3 overtime win at Fort Wayne. The Komets scored the first three goals of the game, but Elmira pulled within one after two periods on goals from Vaskivuo and Artem Demkov, and Culek forced overtime a little over seven minutes into the third period. Dane Walters scored the game-winner for Elmira with 1:16 remaining in the extra session.
Elmira ended the week with a 4-2 win at Toledo on Saturday. Four different Jackals found the back of the net, while Culek added a pair of assists. Conway was strong again in goal for the Jackals, stopping 38 of 40 Walleye shots.
Conway, who started the season in Europe before signing with the Jackals on Jan. 22, is 4-0-0 in five appearances for Elmira with a 1.69 goals-against average and a save percentage of .951. He has made at least 35 saves in three of his four starts with the team.
Vaskivuo has been a key addition for the Jackals since coming over in a trade with Fort Wayne on Jan. 6. He has posted 21 points (8g-13a) and a +13 rating in just 12 games with Elmira. Culek has posted 10 points (3g-7a) in his last nine games and is tied for 11th among ECHL rookies with 26 points (8g-18a) in 31 games this season.
