WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Nailers announced that they have signed defenseman Cliff Loya.
The Nailers are the ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League.
Selected in the seventh round (207th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, the 27 year old has played the last two seasons in Italy where he had 25 points (2g-23a) and 78 penalty minutes in 60 games with Asiago and Cortina.
He played his first three seasons in the ECHL and has 42 points (9g-33a) and 190 penalty minutes in 201 regular season games and three assists and 17 penalty minutes in 12 Kelly Cup Playoff games with San Diego and Wheeling from 2003-06.
The 6-foot-2 and 190-pound Loya posted career highs with Wheeling in 2005-06 when he had four goals, 20 assists, 24 points, 89 penalty minutes and 72 games.
