Nailers take series lead with 3-2 win in Game 3

Franky Palazzese made 28 saves to lead the Wheeling Nailers to a 3-2 win over the Allen Americans in Game 3 of the 2016 Kelly Cup Finals at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va. on Wednesday. The Nailers lead the series 2 games to 1.

After a scoreless first period, Wheeling struck first on a Ty Loney goal 3:12 into the second period but llen answered quickly as Gary Steffes tallied the equalizer just 43 seconds. The goal was Steffes’ eighth career goal in the Kelly Cup Finals, tying him for the third-most goals in a career in ECHL Finals history.

The Nailers’ power play gave them a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Riley Brace‘s shot was redirected by Anton Zlobin, who scored his sixth goal of the playoffs – all coming on the man advantage – at 13:46.

The Americans again tied the game with a power-play goal of their own 4:22 into the third period. Chad Costello fed Greger Hanson between the circles and he beat Palazzese with a quick turn-around shot.

Wheeling answered back at 7:25 as Riley Brace connected with James Melindy and he beat Riley Gill for his first career playoff goal to make it 3-2.

The Nailers went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Americans went 1-for-3.
