ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, back-to-back Pacific Division champions and ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, are pleased to announce the signing of defenseman Jake Newton.
Newton, a native of San Jacinto, Calif., spent last season playing in Italy with the HC Eppan Pirates and was named the league’s best player and helped the team win the Italy2 championship. In 40 games the 24-year-old recorded 38 points (20g-18a).
He split the previous two seasons between the American Hockey League and the Central Hockey League. After being signed by the Anaheim Ducks in 2010, Newton played with their then AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, for 48 games where he recorded nine points (2g-7a) in the 2010-11 season.
Following his debut season, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound blueliner split 2011-12 between the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL) and the Allen Americans (CHL) for a combined total of 42 professional games played and 10 points (2g-8a).
Prior to turning pro, Newton played NCAA hockey with Northeastern University in 2009-10. With Northeastern, he led all team defensemen with 22 points (9g-13a), tied for the collegiate lead in defenseman goals and ranked second in points. Newton was also named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
