Two of the seven series in the Conference Quarterfinals of the 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs have gone to a deciding fifth game, and will be decided tonight.
In the Eastern Conference, home ice has held serve between Elmira and Reading. The eighth-seeded Royals captured the first two games of the series at the Sovereign Center, but the top-seeded Jackals have rebounded with back-to-back wins at First Arena to force the decisive game tonight in Elmira. The Jackals are the 14th team in ECHL history to force a fifth game in a best-of-five series after dropping the first two games. Seven of the previous 13 teams to force the fifth game have gone on to win the series. Artem Demkov and Dustin Gazley lead Elmira in the series with five points (1g-4a) each, while Kenny Ryan paces Reading with three goals and five points. The winner of tonight’s game advances to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, where they will meet the fifth-seeded Florida Everblades.
In the Western Conference, Ontario hosts Idaho tonight at Citizens Business Bank Arena. The teams have alternated wins in the series, with the Reign forcing tonight’s game with a 3-2 win in Game 4 on Saturday. Three of the four games in the series have been decided by one goal, including an overtime win for Ontario in Game 2. Marty Flichel leads Idaho in the series with six points (2g-4a), while the Reign are led by C.J. Stretch, who has four points (1g-3a). The winner advances to the Western Conference Semifinals where they will meet the Las Vegas Wranglers.
