GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Grrrowl appeared to use the same story in Game 3 of a best-of-five ECHL American Conference first round playoff series against the Pensacola Ice Pilots, at the Bi-Lo Center, Saturday night.
This time, however, Pensacola changed the final chapter.
A goal by forward Dwayne Hay (pictured) at the 7:21 mark of the overtime period gave Pensacola a 3-2 victory in front of an announced crowd of 3,253.
The Ice Pilots now trail Greenville 2-1 in the series that will continue, Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center.
“Our team is in great shape,” Pensacola coach Dave Farrish said. “We’re used to playing a lot of hockey in a lot of nights and we feel like we’re getting stronger as the series goes on and we’re looking forward to Tuesday night.”
Hay’s goal came with several Grrrowl and Ice Pilot players grappling for control of the puck in the Greenville crease. He finally managed to nudge it into the net for the victory.
“I think our gas tanks got a little low for that overtime,” said Grrrowl coach John Marks. “The defensemen kind of got out-muscled. They were able to take it to the net. There was a big pile up at the net and the puck went in.”
