Steelheads work overtime to increase winning streak to six games

The Idaho Steelheads put in some extra work last week prior to the holiday break. Idaho won all four of its games during the week, with each game advancing beyond regulation. The Steelheads have won six consecutive games and improved to 15-12-3 on the season.

Idaho’s week began with a 2-1 shootout win at Utah on Monday. Marc Rancourt scored the tying goal early in the third period and then added a goal in shootout while Jerry Kuhn stopped 25 shots in regulation and overtime and turned aside all four Utah shootout attempts to pick up the win.

The Steelheads returned home on Wednesday to open a three-game series against Alaska. Three different Steelheads scored during regulation, and Rancourt and Derek LeBlanc tallied in the shootout as Idaho skated away with a 4-3 win.

On Friday, Idaho picked up a 3-2 win in overtime when Derek Matheson scored in the final minute of the extra session. Kuhn made 47 saves, marking the second consecutive game he stopped at least 40 shots.

The series ended on Friday as the Steelheads prevailed in a shootout, 4-3. Kael Mouillierat scored twice and added an assist while Kuhn ended his week with 35 saves and four saves on five attempts in the shootout.

Kuhn leads the league in saves with 785, which is 216 more than any other goaltender in the ECHL, while he ranks second in minutes played at 1289.

Chad Klassen paces the Steelheads offensively, and leads all ECHL rookies, with 32 points (12g-20a). His 20 assists also are first among rookies and are tied for fifth overall in the league.

The Steelheads put their six-game winning streak on the line this weekend, hosting Las Vegas for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
