Stingrays Sign Johnson, Scherer

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays announced that they have signed forwards Matt Scherer and Keith Johnson.

The Stingrays are the ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

The 26-year-old Scherer had 22 points (13g-9a) and 43 penalty minutes in 55 regular season games and two points (1g-1a) and 21 penalty minutes in 14 Kelly Cup Playoff games for the Stingrays as a rookie in 2007-08.

The 23-year-old Johnson played in the ECHL All-Star Game and had 53 points (27g-26a) and 51 penalty minutes in 67 regular season games and 16 points (6g-10a) and 12 penalty minutes in 15 Kelly Cup Playoff games as a rookie for the Utah Grizzlies in 2007-08. He also played in the AHL where he had two penalty minutes in five games with Bridgeport.
