ELLENTON, Fla. – J.P. Igloo’s Ellenton Eels will have a new name after this season.
The green, gold and black colors will be replaced with red, white and black as they become the Junior Swords in 2005.
The change comes as the newly named ECHL hockey team, the Gulf Coast Swords, prepare to take to the ice for the 2005-06 season.
A $70 million arena under construction in Lakewood Ranch will be home to the Swords, but the Junior Swords will have opportunities to skate there as well.
“We want this to be a strong integration of team and community,” said Larry Kish, senior vice president of DVA Sports.
Junior hockey players will be able to play tournaments and other big games in the arena, as well as have skate time with the ECHL team after designated afternoon games, said DVA Sports President and General Manager Phil Roberto.
“It’s their building and their team,” Roberto said.
