Texas Emergency Backup Savich Earns First Star

BEAUMONT, Texas – Doubled over in pain, Kris Tebbs skated off the ice. Onto the ice skated Scott Savich, a 41-year-old New York native who never played a minute of professional hockey.

Many among the hundreds of fans at Ford Arena rose and applauded. And after the 5-foot-6 Savich stopped one shot during the final 67 seconds of the Wildcatters’ 3-1 victory Sunday against Pensacola, game officials awarded him with the game’s first star, equivalent to most valuable player.

“I never wanted it to end,” said Savich, a trucking business owner who moved to Beaumont soon after his parents’ deaths in December 2004. “I wish I could have stayed out there forever.”
