West Valley City, Utah – Utah Grizzlies Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham announced today that the team has signed veteran defenseman Patrick Wellar as the team’s Player/Assistant Coach for the 2014-15 season.
The Grizzlies are the ECHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League and the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League.
Wellar comes to the Grizzlies with 615 games of professional experience – 309 in the ECHL and 306 in the AHL – and holds four championship rings. He has won three ECHL Kelly Cups: with Alaska in 2006, South Carolina in 2009 and Reading in 2013. He won the AHL’s Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears in 2010. He has dressed in 123 career playoff games with 80 of those played in the ECHL and 43 played in the AHL.
The 30-year-old was a teammate of Branham with the 2008-09 Reading Royals and was a member of the Royals’ championship team in 2013 where Branham was an assistant coach. He has totaled 102 points (27g-75a) and 476 penalty minutes in 309 ECHL games with Peoria, Alaska, Columbia and Reading. He has played 260 of his 306 AHL games with the Hershey Bears and has totaled 51 points (8g-43a) and 569 penalty minutes in the American Hockey League. He also logged time in the AHL with the Peoria Rivermen and Toronto Marlies.
