Toledo's Martin named Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. – Joey Martin of the Toledo Walleye is the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Jan. 9-15.

 

The 21-year-old center scored four goals, added three assists and was a +7 in four games last week, helping the Walleye to a 2-0-2 record.

 

Martin had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss at Wheeling on Wednesday and added two goals, including the game winner, in a 3-0 win against the Nailers on Friday. He had his third straight multi-point game with a goal and an assist, and was +3, in a 5-4 win at Kalamazoo on Saturday, and closed the week with an assist, plus a goal in the shootout, in a 2-1 shootout loss against the K-Wings on Sunday.

 

A native of Thorold, Ontario, Martin leads the Walleye with 12 goals and 25 points this season, while he shares the team lead with 13 assists. His 25 points are tied for eighth among ECHL rookies. He has also seen action in four American Hockey League games with the Houston Aeros, scoring one goal.

 

Martin played four years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, scoring 103 points (39g-64a) in 152 games.

 

On behalf of Joey Martin, a case of pucks will be donated to a Toledo youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 25,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
