Walleye sign defenseman Sims


Toledo, Ohio – The Toledo Walleye announced they have agreed to terms with defenseman Shane Sims for the 2014-15 season.

The Walleye are the ECHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

A native of East Amherst, N.Y., Sims has spent the past two seasons playing in Austria and Denmark. Last year, he appeared in 47 games with HC Innsbruck in Austria, tallying 10 points (1g-9a). A fifth-round selection (126th overall) of the New York Islanders in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Sims posted 21 points (8g-13a) in 39 games with Aalborg in Denmark during the 2012-13 season. He made his pro debut on April 9, 2011 when he appeared in one game for the New York Islanders against Philadelphia and he played his first full pro season in 2011-12 in the ECHL with Gwinnett, notching 18 points (5g-13a) in 47 games.

Prior to turning pro, Sims appeared in 152 games at Ohio State University, recording 71 points (16g-55a) and adding 133 penalty minutes. The 26-year-old was the top scoring defenseman for the 2008-09 Buckeyes with a career best 24 points (7g-17a) in 42 games.
