Wheeling has made a move over .500 with six consecutive wins, improving its overall record to 12-10-5 for 29 points. The Nailers are third in the Atlantic Division and 10th in the Eastern Conference, just one point out of the final playoff spot in the conference.
The Nailers won all four games at home last week, starting with a 3-1 win against Greenville on Tuesday. Chris Barton scored a pair of goals, Luke Pither added two assists and Cody Chupp had a goal and an assist. Peter Delmas picked up the win in goal, making 20 saves.
On Wednesday, Wheeling recorded a 4-1 win against the Road Warriors. Paul Crowder (2g), Andrew Hotham (2a) and Peter Lenes (2a) all had two points and Delmas was strong between the pipes again, turning aside 21 shots.
Wheeling’s offense kept firing on all cylinders on Friday with a 5-1 win against Elmira. Barton scored two goals for the second time in three games, and the Nailers limited the Jackals to just 16 shots on goal.
The Nailers ended the week with a 4-2 victory over Elmira on Saturday. Four different players scored for Wheeling and Crowded contributed two assists. Scott Darling got the start in goal, and earned the win with 19 saves.
Crowder leads the club this season with eight goals and 22 points, and has multiple points in four of the last five games. Barton returned to the lineup on Tuesday after missing the previous 14 games, and tallied six points (5g-1a) in the four games. Since being acquired in a trade with Cincinnati, Hotham has 12 points (3g-9a) in 10 games, and has multiple points in five of the last nine games.
Delmas has appeared in four games since being reassigned to the club from Hamilton of the American Hockey League, going 4-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and a save percentage of .907. Darling has gone 4-2-1 in his last seven decisions, and has allowed three goals or less in five of his last seven games.
Wheeling heads south this week, visiting Greenville on Thursday and Friday and South Carolina on Saturday.
