The 21 year old scored 10 goals and added 16 assists for 26 points, and was a +16, in 13 games in January as the Nailers went 10-2-1. Petersen had seven multi-point games in January and tallied at least one point in 12 of 13 games during the month.
Petersen had two five-point games during the month, scoring three goals and adding two assists in a 6-4 win at Trenton on Jan. 22 and tallying two goals and three assists in a 7-4 victory over the Devils on Jan. 29. He had three points (1g-2a) in a 6-3 win against Cincinnati on Jan. 14, and scored two goals in a 7-1 victory over the Cyclones four nights later. Petersen also earned the ECHL Plus Performer of the Month award after leading the league witha +16 rating in January.
A fourth-round selection (121st overall) of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Petersen leads all rookies, and ranks second in the ECHL, with 57 points. His 24 goals are tied for the lead among first-year players while he leads rookies with 33 assists.
Petersen played three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Shawinigan and Saint John, scoring 198 points (87g-111a) in 178 games.
