ONTARIO, Calif. – The plan is for Jeff Zatkoff to be The Man between the pipes for the Reign this season. Just not on Sunday, after the goaltender spent five days driving from Manchester, N.H., to the Inland Empire.
The Kings’ third-round pick in the 2006 draft was in the building, but not in uniform, for the Reign’s 4-1 preseason loss to the Las Vegas Wranglers at Center Ice Arena.
Zatkoff took part in practice Monday, his first with his new teammates, but is at least somewhat prepared for his first professional season. He appeared in one NHL preseason game for the Kings and another with the Manchester Monarchs, the Kings’ AHL affiliate.
“I got scored on by Paul Kariya,” Zatkoff said. “That’s what I told my family – at least I got scored on by Kariya.”
