Reading, Pa. – The Reading Royals, ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Mike Marcou.
Last season, Marcou led all defensemen on the Greenville Road Warriors with 29 points (8g-21a) in 65 regular-season games. Marcou, who was signed to an AHL deal by the Hartford Wolf Pack prior to the start of the 2013-14 season, also played two games for Hartford. Marcou added five-points (1g-4a) in 18 postseason games for the Road Warriors, who advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals before being eliminated by the Cincinnati Cyclones.
In his rookie season, 2012-13, Marcou also led Greenville defensemen with 25 points (6g-19a) in 54 games while also being selected to represent Greenville at the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game in Loveland, Colorado. That year, Marcou also logged a pair of AHL games with the San Antonio Rampage.
Prior to turning pro, Marcou played four seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In his sophomore season he was selected as the team’s co-Most Improved Player, and in his final year with the Minutemen, Marcou was second in scoring amongst defensemen on the team with 21 points (6g-15a) in 34 games. In 117 games for UMass-Amherst, Marcou recorded 43 points (17g-26a) and 77 penalty minutes.
