Americans win 3-2 in overtime, take series lead

Greger Hanson scored 5:25 into overtime to give the Allen Americans a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 5 of the Kelly Cup Finals on Tuesday at the North Charleston Coliseum. The win gives Allen a 3 games to 2 lead in the series and the Americans will look to claim the Kelly Cup title in Game 6 on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET at South Carolina.

South Carolina opened the scoring 8:17 into the contest as Patrick Gaul was able to slide a shot past Riley Gill.

Allen pulled even 9:09 into the second period when Jamie Schaafsma beat Jeff Jakaitis for his fifth goal of the playoffs.

Chris Crane gave the Americans their first lead of the night 3:01 into the third period as his shot from the right-wing circle eluded Jakaitis.

The Stingrays forced overtime with 3:55 remaining in regulation when Wayne Simpson scored his 13th goal of the playoffs, and extended his ECHL postseason record point total to 38.
