Maione played four years of CIS hockey with the University of Prince Edward Island, suiting up for all 112 games his team played during that stretch, before making his professional debut with the Fort Wayne Koments last spring. During his university hockey career, Maione tallied 65 points (9g-56a) in to go along with 102 penalty minutes and a +24 rating. In 11 regular-season ECHL games, Maione scored three assists and added four penalty minutes, in addition to four assists and 15 penalty minutes in 11 playoff contests.
Prior to beginning his university hockey career, the 5′ 10" 192-pound native of Toronto, Ontario spent three years in the OHL with the Niagara IceDogs and the Guelph Storm. His breakout junior season came in 2008-09 when he scored 23 points (4g-19a) in 53 games.
In 2013 Maione represented both the University of PEI and Atlantic University Sports in the International University Sports Federation Games in Italy, where he scored the game-winning goal for Team Canada in the tournament final to defeat Kazakhstan 6-2 and bring home the gold medal.
