Behind the ECHL Benches – Drake Berehowsky, Orlando Solar Bears

Drake Berehowsky was named the first head coach in Orlando Solar Bears team history on June 19, 2012. He joins the Solar Bears after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with the American Hockey League’s Peoria Rivermen. Prior to joining Peoria, he spent two seasons as assistant and associate coach with the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Colts. 


Berehowsky was a first-round selection (10th overall) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He appeared in 549 career NHL games with Toronto, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Nashville, Vancouver and Phoenix, tallying 149 points (37g-112a) and adding 848 penalty minutes. In addition to his time in the NHL, Berehowsky also suited up for the AHL’s St. John’s Maple Leafs, Carolina Monarchs, Hamilton Bulldogs, Springfield Falcons and San Antonio Rampage, and the International Hockey League’s Cleveland Lumber Jacks. He also spent one season in Sweden and another in Germany.


In addition to his professional coaching, Berehowsky has been active coaching at high levels in Canada including work with Hockey Canada programs such as Team Ontario Under 17 Program, National Coach Mentorship Specialty Clinic and the Under 16 Evaluation Camp. He is a popular instructor at many hockey camps in Canada and the United States.
