Calgary assigns Ortio to Aces

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The
Alaska Aces, ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League and Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League, announced the Flames have assigned goaltender Joni Ortio to the Aces from Abbotsford and have recalled goaltender Laurent Brossoit from Alaska to the Heat.

Ortio, 22, joins the Aces after spending the preseason with the Flames at the 2013 YoungStars Tournament in Penticton, British Columbia. He capped the 2012-13 season as the leader in the SM-Liiga (Finnish Elite League) for minutes played (3,120) while tying for sixth in shutouts (4). For the season, Ortio was 23-20-9 with a 2.42 goals-against-average. The 6-foot-1, 183-pound goaltender also suited up for Finland at the 2013 World Championships and went 3-0 with a 1.98 goals-against-average in three games.

The native of Turku, Finland also has ten games of AHL career experience in Abbotsford with a 1-4-0 record. He was also a member of Finland’s squad at the World Junior Championships for two straight seasons and was named one of the top three players on the team during the 2010-11 tournament. Ortio was selected by the Flames in the sixth round (171st overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Brossoit was assigned to the Aces from Abbotsford on Oct. 2. He appeared in one preseason game with the Aces, making 22 saves on Oct. 8 vs. Cincinnati.
