Chouinard returns to Walleye blue line

Toledo, Ohio – Defenseman Joel Chouinard has agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2015-16 season.

The Walleye are the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings and the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

Chouinard picked up 20 points (5g-15a) in 34 games with the Walleye a season ago while posting a +13 rating. He also collected another eight assists in 19 postseason contests. The 25-year-old also appeared in 29 games last year in the American Hockey League with Grand Rapids and Iowa, adding 10 points (5g-5a).

Since making his pro debut in 2010, the native of Sherbroke, Quebec has appeared in 194 AHL games with 46 points (15g-31a) and 113 penalty minutes. A sixth-round selection (167th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Chouinard spent parts of three seasons with Lake Erie of the AHL. He had 20 points (6Gg-14a) in 42 games with the Denver Cutthroats of the Central Hockey League during the 2012-13 season.

Prior to turning professional, Chouinard spent three-plus seasons with Victoriaville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, including being an assistant captain in 2008-09 and 2009-10. With the Tigres, the 6’1", 187-pound defenseman set career marks in 2009-10 with 23 goals, 45 assists, 68 points and a +23. He posted 144 points (45g-99a) and 236 penalty minutes in 221 career QMJHL games.
