Descoteaux, Abney join Gladiators

DULUTH, Ga. – The Gwinnett Gladiators announced the signing of defenseman Nolan Descoteaux and forward Cameron Abney for the 2014-15 season.

The Gladiators are the ECHL affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League and the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey Legaue.

Descoteaux, 24, played in 11 games for the Gladiators at the end of last season, tallying three points (1g-2a), including an assist in his professional debut on March 14 against South Carolina. The Dallas, Texas native joined the Gladiators after four seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology. In 139 career NCAA games, Descoteaux scored 35 points (12g-23a), and his team reached the 2010 Frozen Four in Detroit as champions of the Atlantic Hockey Association.

Abney, 23, enters his fourth season of professional hockey in 2014-15 after being selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He began last season with the Bakersfield Condors, scoring five points (2g-3a) in 24 games. His rights were traded by Edmonton to Toronto on Jan. 31, and Abney played out the rest of the season with the Orlando Solar Bears, notching two assists in 13 games. The native of Aldergrove, British Columbia also has 21 games of AHL experience with Oklahoma City. Over the course of 129 professional games, Abney has totaled 20 points (9g-11a) and 357 penalty minutes.
