ECHL Commends Media For Coverage

Dheensaw Recognized With Commissioner’s Award
PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL on Friday recognized the media for its coverage of the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs, particularly the finals.

“The ECHL and its teams are very fortunate for the media coverage that we receive,” said Commissioner Brian McKenna. “We saw that media interest increase in the postseason, growing with each round and culminated with the finals where the writers and broadcasters did an outstanding job with game coverage and feature stories. The media coverage received during our conference finals and the Kelly Cup Finals rivals many major-league sports markets.”

In 2004-05, more than 4,000 articles were published online in newspapers in the 28 ECHL markets. The league and teams were featured on ESPN, Fox Sports Net, the NHL Network, CBC and TSN and received worldwide coverage from the major wire services including the Associated Press and Canadian Press.

McKenna also announced that he has chosen Cleve Dheensaw of the Victoria Times-Colonist to receive a “Commissioners Award” for his coverage of the inaugural season of the Victoria Salmon Kings.

“Cleve Dheensaw did an exemplary job of introducing the Salmon Kings and the ECHL to not only Victoria, but all of British Columbia,” said McKenna. “The informative and entertaining feature stories that were written by Mr. Dheensaw leading up to the season opener and continuing throughout the season provided a totally different outlook and perspective on the league.”
