ECHL mourns loss of former coach Smith

The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of former ECHL coach Barry Smith, who passed away on Saturday in Blaine, Tenn.

Smith, who played 114 games over three seasons in the National Hockey League with Colorado and Boston, made his coaching debut in the ECHL with Knoxville in 1992-93. He was named the ECHL Coach of the Year in 1993-94 after leading the Cherokees to a 44-18-6 record, including a then-ECHL record 14-game winning streak from Dec. 28, 1993-Jan. 29, 1994. Over parts of five seasons with Knoxville, Smith posted an overall record of 147-131-26 and led the Cherokees to three appearances in the Riley Cup Playoffs.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Bridges Funeral Home in Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
