ECHL mourns loss of former Peoria owner Saurs

The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of former Peoria Rivermen owner Bruce Saurs, who passed away Thursday morning in Peoria at the age of 88.

Saurs purchased the Rivermen in 1989 while they were members of the International Hockey League. During the 1990-91 season, Peoria won 18 consecutive games, setting a professional hockey record, and went on to win the IHL’s Turner Cup championship.

The Rivermen joined the ECHL as an expansion team in 1996-97, and captured a Kelly Cup title in 2000. During their nine seasons in the ECHL, the Rivermen won three division titles, advanced to the postseason eight times and posted a .658 regular-season winning percentage, which ranks second all-time in League history.

Saurs was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was also inducted into the Rivermen Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Bradley University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

Arrangements are pending at this time.
