AUGUSTA, Ga. – Cam Ellsworth came about as close as possible to making the Augusta Lynx out of training camp.
The rookie goaltender lasted until the final day of cuts, but when the American Hockey League’s Houston Aeros assigned Seamus Kotyk to the Lynx, Ellsworth was the odd man out.
“That’s the game,” Ellsworth said Thursday. “It’s not like there are any hard feelings or anything like that.”
One injury and one call up later for the Lynx, and Ellsworth is back in Augusta and will likely start at least one of the team’s two road games this weekend. Coach Bob Ferguson also signed another rookie, Trevor Cunning, who the Pensacola Ice Pilots released Tuesday.
“We’ll probably take a look at both of them this weekend and see what we’ve got,” Ferguson said after Thursday’s practice, during which both goaltenders participated. “I don’t know which one will go first yet.”
