PRINCETON, N.J. – Brian Stewart of the Elmira Jackals has been named the ECHL Goaltender of the Month for March.
Stewart was 7-1-1 with one shutout, a 1.62 goals-against average and a save percentage of .937 in nine appearances during the month, helping the Jackals to the Atlantic Division championship and the number one seed in the Eastern Conference for the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
The 26-year-old opened the month with three straight victories, including his first shutout of the season on March 4 against Reading. After suffering his only regulation loss of the month on March 16 against Florida, Stewart reeled off four consecutive wins, including a 40-save performance in a 3-2 win at Wheeling on March 25. Stewart allowed two goals or less in each of his first eight appearances during the month.
A native of Burnaby, British Columbia, Stewart was third in the ECHL with 26 wins, while ranking ninth with a .917 save percentage and 10th with a 2.56 goals-against average.
Stewart has appeared in 69 career ECHL games with Elmira, Bakersfield and Greenville posting an overall record of 46-17-2 with two shutouts, a 2.43 goals-against average and a save percentage of .921. Last season, he was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team after leading the league with a .927 save percentage and finishing second with a 2.25 goals-against average.
