The Delta, British Columbia native appeared in 39 games last season and accounted for 17 points (2g-15a). Despite being sidelined for the final 33 games of the season, Atwal posted a team-high +11 rating and ranked third on the team with 98 penalty minutes.

Atwal skated the 2015-16 season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League, where he was second on the team in defensemen scoring, totaling 50 points (11g-39a) in 71 games. Prior to his time in Lethbridge, the 20-year-old spent parts of four seasons with the WHL's Vancouver Giants, accounting for 58 points (14g-44a) in 154 games.
