The home team continued to hold serve in the 2019 Kelly Cup Finals presented by SmileDirectClub on Wednesday as the Toledo Walleye defeated the Newfoundland Growlers 4-1 in front of 8,472 fans at Huntington Center. The Growlers lead the best-of-seven series 2 games to 1.
After a scoreless first period, Newfoundland opened the scoring 4:01 into the second period as Derian Plouffe left a drop pass for Hudson Elynuik in the left-wing cirlce, and he snapped a shot past Pat Nagle for his sixth goal of the playoffs.
Toledo pulled even at 14:05 of the second when Ryan Obuchowski sent a shot towards the net from the left point which was deflected by Zach Gallant past Growlers' goaltender Michael Garteig. The Walleye took the lead just 1:33 later when Greg Wolfe put the rebound of a Shane Berschbach shot past Garteig for his ninth goal of the postseason.
The Walleye took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission after Berschbach notched his third goal of the series on a power play at 18:36. Berschbach added his second goal of the night at 11:32 of the third period to set the final.
The attendance of 8,472 ranks as the fifth-largest crowd in the Kelly Cup Playoffs since 2000.
